| Morey & Hurford (A Division of Fairbrother
P/L) were appointed Construction Managers for the new
Federally funded Technical College that was to be introduced
into Bendigo, as part of a national roll out of Technical
Colleges throughout Australia. The concept for the
Bendigo College was that a Board of Management from
industry was appointed to bring the concept of “school
based apprentices aligned with specific companies for
their practical learning” from design to reality.
A bold architectural concept was “signed off”
by the local Council which drove the external façade
elements. The main external feature being a 10 metre
high glazed panel suspended off the main structure by
900mm, depicting a black and white image digitally laminated
into the glass. Morey & Hurford worked in tandem
with the design team who were constantly updating the
layouts and design as the project evolved. At times
this was very frustrating for the on site team, but
the designer worked exceptionally well to accommodate
on-site requirements.
Internal fitout consisted of staff and management areas;
entry lobby / library; externally managed café;
student retreat areas; classrooms and ground floor workshops.
The main structure was developed utilising the “hollowcore”
precast panel modules systems - where the modules are
transported to site and erected to create floor panels
and braced by vertical panels of precast concrete at
the ends of the building.
Internal fitout of all services, partitions, ceilings
and finishes were completed utilising conventional methods
of studwork / plaster and “drop in” ceiling
grid systems.
The final product produced a Technical College that
accommodated both staff and students in terrific complex
to complement their trade training.
