About Construction of a new Performing Arts Centre at Bendigo’s Girton Grammar

Morey & Hurford’s successful completion of this design and construct project marked the culmination of several years of planning by Girton Grammar and BGA Architects, and is the largest single development undertaken by the school since its formation in 1993.

As is the case for all Girton’s major works, Morey & Hurford negotiated the contract on a Construction Management basis. Engaged early in the planning, we were able to have significant input into construction methods, selection of materials and later choice of subcontractors.

The project consists of two dual-storey buildings with a total area of 2,460m2.

Building 1 is a classroom block with specific areas for storage of musical instruments. Built in an L shape to incorporate and feature an existing Oak tree, it is also complimented by a sweeping reinforced concrete access stair. Precast reinforced columns, beams and wall panels with bondek 1st floor slab form the main structure. Significant external features include circular windows, custom orb cladding, angled sun screens and a concrete elevated walkway linking this building to the main school building.

Building 2 was constructed using principally the same basic framework, but incorporates many architectural features to facilitate its multifunctional uses. These are a combination of music prac rooms, tutorial rooms, staff offices, board room, staff prep areas, toilets and the Performing Arts Drama Centre. This large centre piece two-storey “Black Box” is a steel framed structure with overhead gantry and feature lighting. Adjacent is a control room at first floor level and change rooms. Externally the black box features angled walls formed with timber trusses and lined with vitrapanel cladding and colorbond panels. The reception area to this building is highlighted with an aluminium framed glass façade and numerous circular porthole windows providing a magnificent view out to the Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Maintaining the budget was the most critical aspect for the school as no Government funding was involved. This necessitated countless meetings to view and review every aspect of expenditure. The end result is a magnificent asset at exceptional value for money to the Girton Grammar Community.
